Good evening everyone or for some of you just picking this up… it’s good morning to you.
So, here we go….Woz on….firstly I’ll mention the Middle East and say “when did chucking rockets at each other ever solve anything!” “What a mess, everyone hating each other, just ain’t good and what does it solve? Here’s hoping it doesn’t affect us, utter madness!” Rant over….
….and on to much more positive things… like last weekend. What a busy club it was! On Saturday several of the helpers were their pretty early and between us we got everything shipshape ready for The Paul Coates’ Ultim8construction lunch. Ann and Justin sorted their grub out. The Chair Chis Gould welcome everyone and quaffing, eating and relaxing was the order of the day from then on. I must say a big thanks to Paul as he has been a great contributor to the club as one of our main sponsors. He also always brings a good crowd with him and like him, seem to all enjoy supporting our humble little club . Did you know Ann and Justin, with players meals included, catered for over 120 lunches which in no mean task and it does deserves a big pat on the back. Most pubs don’t do that many covers in a day. Thanks also has to go to the bar staff of Corrie, Emma and Brad who between them did a very long shift serving beers etc and then, they went to Churchie’s 40th party do his bar as well!
Ok, on to the rugby.. we owed South Molton one from last season and boy did we do that! What a display of running rugby, we scored 14 tries. Some of which were just plain “pretty to watch”. Fact was we smashed ‘em and won 79-12 which is a bit of a cricket score I know but who cares. There is a real air of confidence about the place and our “ new returners” really seem to be enjoying themselves without the pressure of higher league rugby. The sun was out and the large band of supporters were to be seen positively beaming as they enjoyed the spectacle. It was very entertaining.
So, you thing that’s it… no! not a bit of it as on the top pitch, our second team did another demolition job on much fancied Topsham 3rds. Interestingly, there can’t have been time to do much else than score, as the final result was a 81- 49 victory ! You’d also be surprised to hear that with just 10 minutes gone we were 0-21 down. So what happened?.. well… I’d say it was “rugby” that happened. Their club has had an influx of Uni boys over the last few years and they tend to be all young and fit and on this day, their wide players, when they got the ball, just ran round us… but…what we had in our armoury was several gnarly, long in the tooth experienced “thugs”, (bit harsh but it’s a good description) and these individuals dealt (fairly) with their yuff when they got hold of them!... and several didn’t want to know after their experiences of being tackled. So…we over turned the deficit and then bullied them off the park. Rugby is a game for all sizes and shapes and we had a better blend of yuff and experience than them! Unbeaten after three! The twos are on fire!
So on to Sunday… just as busy, as we kicked of all our Junior games and our Junior chair Stuart Perry said it was just great to be back. Clare and her kitchen gang churned out the food, which is excellent. If you ever want to come down and watch and have some breckie this is the place for you.
Our 15’s made it a miserable weekend for South Moulton as we piped them by 21-20. I won’t go though all the games as there are match reports on our very popular facebook pages. Must be said it wasn’t all plain sailing as some of our teams did bump into some very strong teams form Teignmouth. Our new Under 7’s joined in the fun and big thanks to coach Nicki Perry and Autumn Palmer their manager for taking this next batch on and it must be said there are lots of under 6’s in there as well .
On to this weekend diary …. No game for the ones on Saturday as this is meant to be the first round of cup games for all Devon teams but as mentioned last week, we drew South Molton and they wanted last week’s league game to double up which as you know, we won convincingly and this means both teams can take a rest.
Our seconds this week have a much bigger tasks than their first three games of the season as they revert back to league action with a long away trip up to Ilfracombee. The fact is, it’s a long way up there and our First team don’t even travel this far. Over the years this has always been a tough fixture for us as it’s against their first team.. Big thanks to long suffering club servant Joe Keep who with his firm Bradleys Estate Agents, has sponsored a mini bus to take the troops up. Good luck chaps !
Sunday…all our games are against Exeter Sarries. At home we have the U12s and 11’s who kick off at 11am on the top pitch and on the bottom pitch the 8’s start at 10.30am followed by our 14’s who kick of at 11.30 . Out 15’s, 13’s 11’s 9’s and 7’s are down at their place which is next door to the Athletics track If you need directions
That’s the update for this week… #UTT
Yours
Jez
